<br /></div>
<div>
I actually haven't been finding that much, but the hunt is really more the point. found some more vintage Japanese (far left) and California (center) ceramics. if it has a drippy glaze and it's blue, brown, or orange, it comes home with me to join the ceram-fam.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I planted a few succulents in the orange pot today, I'm definitely in a spring planting mood!</div>

this bit of bad-assery makes me happier every time I look at it. it's by an artist named Virgil Thrasher, and the black border and wheat graphics are painted on glass and then the sunset background sits behind it, shadow box style. the label on the back says it's from 1974. I paid $4, but I found a few on ebay listed between $25 and $300. so it's maybe worth a few bucks? anyway no way I'm selling it, this baby is going up in the bedroom.<br />

<br />
anyway there's not much one can do when you have to spend whole days lying on your back with frozen broccoli under your neck. I spent a lot of time playing with my phone, which is why I'm now totally obsessed with <a href="http://instagr.am/">Instagram</a>. I forgot Pinterest even existed, that's how much I love Instagram.<br />
<br />
in my stiff-necked state I haven't been able to get out and take a ton of new photos, but here's a few I posted...both new and old ones I found on my phone's camera roll just begging to be filtered and made all pretty.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihF5k7hkpPDF7fXDGigrLn9qqY3-xeywIjQ6ZMS1gE5nlxIsoStKGCzVyZhL3a76F3l_GzRGpNSd45wNiM55JTKpyZAK1jK4mT8rqzwB4PCBm227ATbfNLVW56M4QklDZ7cVZlLbRL0kI/s1600/ig_springforward.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihF5k7hkpPDF7fXDGigrLn9qqY3-xeywIjQ6ZMS1gE5nlxIsoStKGCzVyZhL3a76F3l_GzRGpNSd45wNiM55JTKpyZAK1jK4mT8rqzwB4PCBm227ATbfNLVW56M4QklDZ7cVZlLbRL0kI/s1600/ig_springforward.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Daylight savings started today...I wouldn't mind losing the hour of sleep if I didn't also lose all that time changing clocks.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFCs71hNy1p9zGem1ip1oUii-nb3LqPaoi7n1GtEQ6ATXsWhnfH1qqCSPsRo2GpcMgKwm0zki2BQMmEcg_kv_coPsk739966HUayKU41GissUUeKFt3WfDAMJbMsxF0krn5riNQqCNnbg/s1600/ig_springflowers.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFCs71hNy1p9zGem1ip1oUii-nb3LqPaoi7n1GtEQ6ATXsWhnfH1qqCSPsRo2GpcMgKwm0zki2BQMmEcg_kv_coPsk739966HUayKU41GissUUeKFt3WfDAMJbMsxF0krn5riNQqCNnbg/s1600/ig_springflowers.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Josh is the best, basically, ever. He goes to the farmers market on sundays and usually buys me flowers, like a big sweetie, while I stay in bed and drink coffee and check facebook.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggtNjB9lWix6OT8njJV-jKtzWtwCLL3UzSolQOpZ3D20UNmQxOnO5dbOOL24zbS11mKmVH4OqcMz6ODZPKo2RBEysZK5OqDygq5XUw8M7bS72Zjo32tvnLG9Tz7ntrkKwrqD9dw1kBgN0/s1600/ig_dinos.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggtNjB9lWix6OT8njJV-jKtzWtwCLL3UzSolQOpZ3D20UNmQxOnO5dbOOL24zbS11mKmVH4OqcMz6ODZPKo2RBEysZK5OqDygq5XUw8M7bS72Zjo32tvnLG9Tz7ntrkKwrqD9dw1kBgN0/s1600/ig_dinos.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
this is from 3 years ago, and makes me really really really want to go to Palm Springs as soon as possible. hey Josh, you heard all the nice things I said about you earlier, right??<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7RqTpPfysjKAIpNe3GVHH8k4uNx_6P5TVURZWPY14YuUq8ghPOby2-FccjLhSw9HiHZOSvqpv2XoubEvFKF40Bz28FGa7_aYITXHdfo9FCCG8e_QiMlh4gMrIJkvRURD_EGgdFnkBl3k/s1600/ig_jodystore.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7RqTpPfysjKAIpNe3GVHH8k4uNx_6P5TVURZWPY14YuUq8ghPOby2-FccjLhSw9HiHZOSvqpv2XoubEvFKF40Bz28FGa7_aYITXHdfo9FCCG8e_QiMlh4gMrIJkvRURD_EGgdFnkBl3k/s1600/ig_jodystore.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
this is in downtown LA, and completely surprised and delighted me when I came across it. it's a Jody store! it also reminds me of the Seinfeld bit where George has the great line he wants to use on his co-worker..."The jerk store called, and they're running out of you". <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiiR8M6JvAXVEJWEvMqA4IiJ7Bh87U_PupZOf4SA2tnEzEft7CaH15TKPN_JcQDrj-LaArlXkkLW62bjJKDPPI2QAkwOjV2uPCjRM8yCq-o77ya_0smou7Tq0_k93EA8BxTqr4G-zrD_tE/s1600/ig_pillow.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiiR8M6JvAXVEJWEvMqA4IiJ7Bh87U_PupZOf4SA2tnEzEft7CaH15TKPN_JcQDrj-LaArlXkkLW62bjJKDPPI2QAkwOjV2uPCjRM8yCq-o77ya_0smou7Tq0_k93EA8BxTqr4G-zrD_tE/s1600/ig_pillow.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
oh yeah remember last week when I was bragging about all the pillows I was gonna finish...well here's one that's <i>still</i> not done. but kinda pretty, right?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigZwvqq2y5i5AoDPstuDk-NqGH1DkAMtr6vvzLPjhmS2DPYQcfku4d8vSsNCunXFvdSvOEuue4UB-OMRLJoZ6n83l8QEuHudl1NjwqvlCdQR2ilo8tb-9sj6s2XSF0RIWY592w6HMX8yg/s1600/ig_pinkjody.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigZwvqq2y5i5AoDPstuDk-NqGH1DkAMtr6vvzLPjhmS2DPYQcfku4d8vSsNCunXFvdSvOEuue4UB-OMRLJoZ6n83l8QEuHudl1NjwqvlCdQR2ilo8tb-9sj6s2XSF0RIWY592w6HMX8yg/s1600/ig_pinkjody.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
and yeah, that's me. from a few weeks ago, when the pink streaks were still pretty fabulous. now they are faded and sad, and no one cares anyway because I just lie in bed, moaning and alternating heat and ice and playing with Instagram.<br />
<br />
so hey, find me on Instagram! I'm <a href="http://instagrid.me/craftnik/">craftnik</a>...I only have 3 followers right now, which is really embarrassing.<br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOazL_qjB0j7ylCSCvdscj3O4RLo55_IpFNEpRdS4G6jUbgPCxxc55FOOTGfuZDuAhG5f8bnHFKZfRcVcltSItj7eLpIvWFaJdHdPliin8SW7T1ZSw8jOsUDvLDwhSjM5JDyWXnANWan8/s1600/bench+01.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="384" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOazL_qjB0j7ylCSCvdscj3O4RLo55_IpFNEpRdS4G6jUbgPCxxc55FOOTGfuZDuAhG5f8bnHFKZfRcVcltSItj7eLpIvWFaJdHdPliin8SW7T1ZSw8jOsUDvLDwhSjM5JDyWXnANWan8/s640/bench+01.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I made the teal cushion and all the bargello pillows, but I'm taking the whole apartment in a more calm, neutral, ethnic/rustic/modern direction lately. so the crazy riot of color and retro pattern that was happening on the bench wasn't working anymore.<br />
<br />
so, I decided to make some new cushions, and I went with a simple hand-tied futon type mat made from old linen. I worked on it for a couple hours on saturday. I was kinda digging it, but then I realized it was not deep enough for the seat. I was willing to overlook that mistake...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBTnukPt3Prx63CoUnphzJiGEoA7OZNs3BMKaROV5NIH_TLenkvUlQcYgheqBTIjrnEASbGPfYAnu-oLey34iMomub0kbBc5af_3kRA75jioUJOSTh8a1ujexF_bIdCCZ1Xts9YqicPYE/s1600/bench+02.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="438" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBTnukPt3Prx63CoUnphzJiGEoA7OZNs3BMKaROV5NIH_TLenkvUlQcYgheqBTIjrnEASbGPfYAnu-oLey34iMomub0kbBc5af_3kRA75jioUJOSTh8a1ujexF_bIdCCZ1Xts9YqicPYE/s640/bench+02.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
until I realized it was <i>also</i> several inches too short.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCZ-x5IMjoEEs11HToN-shL0js43b6XTah9A59CP6632_cfGnqPu9yspbcnNs2upbZcDUO44PXE3Yn3_10H3jM7eBQHnL2Tut5eqvVEVEq-xHGsQ9CaGCJt1pMZGB8d6z1wjrttKPTavo/s1600/bench+03.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCZ-x5IMjoEEs11HToN-shL0js43b6XTah9A59CP6632_cfGnqPu9yspbcnNs2upbZcDUO44PXE3Yn3_10H3jM7eBQHnL2Tut5eqvVEVEq-xHGsQ9CaGCJt1pMZGB8d6z1wjrttKPTavo/s640/bench+03.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<b>wtf?!?</b> I am a good seamstress, people. I don't make these kind of rookie mistakes. I certainly don't make two of them! I seriously don't know what happened here. I got so mad about it, I decided I don't even WANT the bench anymore. that'll teach it, for being all confusing in its dimensions! <br />
<br />
it's ok, nobody sits on it anyway, it's just there as a showcase for pillows. so I'll be putting it on craigslist soon, I think. if you're in the SoCal area and in the market for a cute mid-century bench (with a teal cushion that fits it perfectly), send me a message!<br />
<br />
after the cushion debacle, I decided to make a pillow, which I know I can do properly. I had some scraps of linen that I had tie-dyed blue at <a href="https://www.frenchgeneral.com/">French General's</a> last <a href="http://frenchgeneral.blogspot.com/2012/02/woading-in-elysian-park.html">Woad Dyeing Workshop</a>, so I did a sort of random log cabin kinda thing with it, just to see what happened.<br />
<br />

<br />
I actually really like it! it looks like clouds, don't you think? I was so into this one, I started a second even cooler pillow in the same vein. I'll share that one with you in a couple days.<br />
<br />
I'm serious about selling the bench, let me know if you want it. I'll even send you the dimensions...but don't be surprised if it's a little bigger than you expected!<br />

I've started reading <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Lacuna-Novel-Barbara-Kingsolver/dp/0060852577">The Lacuna</a> by Barbara Kingsolver, and I love it...I'm too tired these days to read for very long before bed, but I've gotten to the part where Frida Kahlo comes in, and I wanted a clearer picture in my mind of what she really looked like, cause all I could see was Salma Hayek.<br />

turns out she was way more beautiful and stylish than I remembered!<br />

it's the last couple weeks of the worst part of post production on the movie I'm working on...then I'm looking forward to a little break and a chance to work on all my projects. until then, my weekends are spent re-charging. this morning I stayed in bed till 10:30! haven't done that in years...not sleeping, just reading blogs and snuggling with Stoli.<br />
<br />
I even had breakfast in bed! Josh made banana walnut muffins...<br />

saturday I did some thrifting, and came home with a few things...like another vintage Belgian apothecary jar...I have several of these but I always grab them when I see em, not sure why. I'm always on the lookout for blue ones but so far no dice. <br />

and then some clothes and shoes...yellow leather heels, Dolce Vita sandal booties, brown leather boots (candidate for some crafty embellishment), a big red sun hat (the kind I look for in July but can't find one that fits my big head), a silk robe with big roses, Donna Karan leather backpack, Ella Moss sweater, and a silk mini-skirt.<br />

(NOT a grilled cheese sandwich and a massage, which is all I want when I try to run anywhere). googling "knit sneaker" led me down the internet rabbit hole to discover all kinds of knitted shoes...<br />
<br />
(these are not Nike's fancy high-performance state of the art shoes, but it would be awesome if they were)<br />

...but not until I block the Bosc scarf. :(Jody Ricehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08542932289209859019noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1734407712735096588.post-80052454014722171932012-02-19T19:40:00.000-08:002012-02-19T19:40:26.225-08:00blind hatredI've lived in a lot of apartments...just in Los Angeles, I think it's been almost ten. there was the one with the roommate who decorated the whole place like a cheesy Moroccan restaurant, the one with the drunk upstairs who would frequently lay on the floor and scream until he passed out (only lived in that one a month) and the one where my roommate and I were convinced there was a gypsy curse...we found a small door with no knob that opened onto a crawlspace, and inside was a wooden cross, a bowl of salt, and burnt matches...<br />
<br />
apartments can also be <i>awesome</i>, as evidenced by my current apartment, which is so quiet and spacious and gets wonderful light all day. but there are always tell-tale signs that you're in a rental, and for me one of those signs is vertical blinds:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgasRFMsAzfq5QqHmhki1dK-v3p4ia9FjP7iwKNGjp0M4oyKdN_2M3RpGgOBW4PwBc_Q6lnZWM4p8Jtnnk2UGG5rEOG-bnQ1dYlP6DW2aODQyLVbI97BZXyejIuUKUPTb_cLYMf3m_Pja0/s1600/blinds.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgasRFMsAzfq5QqHmhki1dK-v3p4ia9FjP7iwKNGjp0M4oyKdN_2M3RpGgOBW4PwBc_Q6lnZWM4p8Jtnnk2UGG5rEOG-bnQ1dYlP6DW2aODQyLVbI97BZXyejIuUKUPTb_cLYMf3m_Pja0/s640/blinds.jpg" width="490" /></a></div>
<br />
I can't tell you how much I hate them! other people think they're innocuous, but they get so dusty, and they're always getting stuck, and the cats love to run through them and make that terrible sound of vinyl clacking together. yikes...do I sound a little bit like Nadine from Twin Peaks right now??<br />
<br />
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/ADyHB29AuFY" width="420"></iframe><br />
<br />
anyway we have fantastic landlords who told me I can do whatever I like to the apartment, so this weekend the blinds all came down! SO much better:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5Uj2vAFzOFgeqT8czMMl9frXTwWLo1hJ8pVcWDZkSSBY3HhEz4owRpIKcM4tY2MW-AsAZSEU8TWjcRCs576XKQOzQi5SKx17bD3gMcAQkoHTMMb_A5enWVU4x7amQFUBYuXKx2xCToEc/s1600/no+blinds.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5Uj2vAFzOFgeqT8czMMl9frXTwWLo1hJ8pVcWDZkSSBY3HhEz4owRpIKcM4tY2MW-AsAZSEU8TWjcRCs576XKQOzQi5SKx17bD3gMcAQkoHTMMb_A5enWVU4x7amQFUBYuXKx2xCToEc/s640/no+blinds.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I think in most of the apartment I'll probably just end up leaving the windows bare, we don't really have a problem with neighbors being able to see in. we'll see how I feel about that in the heat of summer, but for now I'm loving the soft winter light streaming in and no crappy plastic "valances" ruining the lines of the windows.<br />
<br />
in other news, I finished the Bosc scarf tonight! now I just need to block it...blerg. but it's sooo soft and cuddly and such an amazing color, I'm motivated to block it so I can wear it right away!<br />
<br />
and the jaw is much better...even was able to finish off the bag of swedish fish!Jody Ricehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08542932289209859019noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1734407712735096588.post-34013522049753625802012-02-15T19:08:00.000-08:002012-02-15T19:08:09.551-08:00open wide<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
sorry I've been missing this week...the last few days have been taken up with two things:<br />
<br />
1. I sprained my jaw! well, that's my self diagnosis anyway. I was eating swedish fish while watching Hugo (amazing movie, btw) a few days ago...and all of a sudden my jaw popped out of alignment. and then I couldn't open it for about an hour, and it's just today that I've been able to eat anything more solid than a banana. so that's been a blast. and...<br />
<br />
2. we had our first appointment with the cat whisperer! I'm going to reserve judgement until we try her suggestions for improving Mal's behavior. but it was...underwhelming, I guess? I wanted definitive answers and a solid plan, and that didn't really happen. but I know with animals that's hard to do. <br />
<br />
it's going to be an interesting few months of experimenting to see what works, and even though it's not craft, it might fall into the realm of art! anyway I'll probably blog about it because we haven't found much online advice that's really helpful. so I hope you don't mind more cat related posts!<br />
<br />
<i>(that's my old kitty Grimy up there, yawning in the way she did where her whole face kinda unhinged. I'm jealous of that ability right now, yawning is hard to do when you can't open your mouth!)</i>Jody Ricehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08542932289209859019noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1734407712735096588.post-73116151319950853692012-02-08T20:55:00.000-08:002012-02-08T20:55:32.309-08:00mixology<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I've been thinking a lot about watercolors lately...I miss painting! I haven't done it in so long, and I've pretty much never painted just for the fun of it. it's always been a rendering for a costume, or a background for a short film, or an illustration for one of the craft books.<br />
<br />
anyway in preparation of doing some painting I pulled out this color chart I made years ago...it's all the colors of <a href="http://www.docmartins.com/products/radiant-concentrated-watercolor-sets-0-5oz">Dr Ph Martin's Radiant Concentrated watercolors</a> (the only kind I use) and how they all combine to make new colors. It's actually pretty hard to figure out how to mix watercolors without wasting a ton of paint, so this way when I need to make a dirty olive green, I look it up on the chart and I know to combine Chartreuse and Antelope Brown. it's kind of a work of art on its own, don't you think?<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgoXod7oHNmj-knfZ74xuVNXkc0ulX88v4fuTKHvi35i_T9AOQHrCtgqrrELfSQDkVe_rvpwnmGHAml0Dk3W3RSfmZzC4pj9DdYkDQ6QG7jAkpb3RNS95ZUfomypB679XRZCPaWCWHG4oo/s1600/watercolor01.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="474" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgoXod7oHNmj-knfZ74xuVNXkc0ulX88v4fuTKHvi35i_T9AOQHrCtgqrrELfSQDkVe_rvpwnmGHAml0Dk3W3RSfmZzC4pj9DdYkDQ6QG7jAkpb3RNS95ZUfomypB679XRZCPaWCWHG4oo/s640/watercolor01.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />

hopefully soon I'll have some time to sit down and do some painting again...it's <i>definitely</i> going to suck at first, but I'll try to show you what results. :)Jody Ricehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08542932289209859019noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1734407712735096588.post-78641754370380277232012-02-06T22:55:00.000-08:002012-02-06T22:55:33.692-08:00sunny days and mondaysreally, mondays suck regardless of the weather, don't you think? in fact waking up to a beautiful sunny monday kinda makes the fact that you have to go to work even more of an insult.<br />
<br />
anyway it was a lovely weekend, we enjoyed the weather and hiked in Griffith Park, I thrifted, and nobody watched the Superbowl, which is fine by me. and I had <i>lots</i> of time for knitting. the Bosc scarf is getting so close to being done! I'm alternating between that and my new pattern, which is half done now. here's a sneak peek...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEitpk33N2wI3dxFYCOX6A432h8n5Hqg02Tw4mUdocjmJnAbdPPhveCPl3ckgXLooiDZSp8A3MUyo5EJ3T3Cwv-oczkeWcGv-JG9vDcMtpEJp_twDbn6NrzAdtrXcsSQGTga5rkRYcFaDWs/s1600/newchart03.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEitpk33N2wI3dxFYCOX6A432h8n5Hqg02Tw4mUdocjmJnAbdPPhveCPl3ckgXLooiDZSp8A3MUyo5EJ3T3Cwv-oczkeWcGv-JG9vDcMtpEJp_twDbn6NrzAdtrXcsSQGTga5rkRYcFaDWs/s640/newchart03.jpg" width="516" /></a></div>
<br />
what else...thrifting was almost a bust. I picked up these Japanese hand thrown cups for 50 cents, which I put in my medicine cabinet to hold eyeliners and brushes:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSEv2Mcdn9ux13x294sRKxZrA81mac9tk0pNF9kt2TcDeODvfgnJHOTDGHGdTAJh_BSswRm6KewM0nTymvApcoWSAGwGCkIxWbhNpfl137UFtMprTT2-koGokamtRYpYGHmVIJBd4H9IQ/s1600/makeup+cups.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSEv2Mcdn9ux13x294sRKxZrA81mac9tk0pNF9kt2TcDeODvfgnJHOTDGHGdTAJh_BSswRm6KewM0nTymvApcoWSAGwGCkIxWbhNpfl137UFtMprTT2-koGokamtRYpYGHmVIJBd4H9IQ/s640/makeup+cups.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
and this funny goose bowl, which I'm keeping by the sink to toss earrings and stuff in:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyFygZftJ-h9ZnlpXLaWkYidH-fuGWOrgTM71dNsxNPkXXpdOwGliIwqX2S9vk2FKyz6QF8MCto2SklDC-eXwWOLgN_cyWMbrMGCYko0wpxizg1G076m2cAMCEgmUg5IOkVXNE7NXqyBY/s1600/goose.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="446" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyFygZftJ-h9ZnlpXLaWkYidH-fuGWOrgTM71dNsxNPkXXpdOwGliIwqX2S9vk2FKyz6QF8MCto2SklDC-eXwWOLgN_cyWMbrMGCYko0wpxizg1G076m2cAMCEgmUg5IOkVXNE7NXqyBY/s640/goose.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
and I stopped at the hardware store and got a couple ferns. I love ferns, but they don't do well in the LA heat in my experience. I've had some before and they got burnt to a crisp once summer arrived, so maybe I'll bring these inside once it gets hotter. for now they make the balcony all shady and lush.<br />
<br />

oh and we are hoping to make an appt with the cat behaviorist this week, so I will fill you all in on how that goes. Mal does her best to look innocent but hopefully the Cat Whisperer will see through it.<br />

<br />
all I want to do is work on my new knitting chart, but it requires some focus, which I just don't have late at night anymore. I'm excited about it though...maybe I'll make some progress this weekend.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVN4NSiqtVNOCb_nKv_cFitNf8HVarZiB6YLLn2x5sHgQ9a-6p-eTV15va_7Xxkxvblvv_OtC0pro8q5Ok4kD5mvmlXGuEF0UZrtUhbcj8ylZ21BXaFvKCbv2p-qhf3OQZ3cwOvWcnGQ8/s1600/newchart01.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="422" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVN4NSiqtVNOCb_nKv_cFitNf8HVarZiB6YLLn2x5sHgQ9a-6p-eTV15va_7Xxkxvblvv_OtC0pro8q5Ok4kD5mvmlXGuEF0UZrtUhbcj8ylZ21BXaFvKCbv2p-qhf3OQZ3cwOvWcnGQ8/s640/newchart01.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Stoli gets jealous when I pay attention to anything other than him these days. knitting and cats is a tricky combination.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBY7xJs4wjSAojmQnH8805ha4p5HPiedgU7zdPwN6H9As6OpqiEgy541CVTR-UO36uId_Pw9qcM_d3pCDDhgzplZJ8Dd2V7r_8jubzWg0jYm9dnGdDEKD4in4RUi_VgiHXJMxhszJ4LII/s1600/newchart02.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBY7xJs4wjSAojmQnH8805ha4p5HPiedgU7zdPwN6H9As6OpqiEgy541CVTR-UO36uId_Pw9qcM_d3pCDDhgzplZJ8Dd2V7r_8jubzWg0jYm9dnGdDEKD4in4RUi_VgiHXJMxhszJ4LII/s640/newchart02.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
but with a sweet boy like this, it's hard to get mad when he lies on my yarn in protest. I can knit when he's sleeping. :)Jody Ricehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08542932289209859019noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1734407712735096588.post-12500047440975258172012-01-29T22:03:00.000-08:002012-01-29T22:36:00.945-08:00extreme thriftingif they can make a show out of people clipping coupons, they could surely do one on thrifting. wouldn't that be more interesting than watching people get excited about 2 for 1 toothpaste deals? the best part of thrifting for me is the drama of it...it's never the same twice. some days you strike out and come home with nothing, other days you can't stop finding great stuff.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
but you have to be willing to deal with some crazy situations, which is where the extreme part comes in...my current favorite thrift store (I'm not telling you the name, that's how good it is) is deep in the San Fernando Valley, totally huge (I spent 2 hrs there saturday and didn't see it all), packed at all hours of the day, and only takes cash. people there are totally intense and will take things out of your cart if you don't watch them. I even once saw a man there have a seizure and fall down and crack his head open, sprawled out bleeding on the floor, and people did not stop shopping. now that is good television!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
anyway I was so happy to have a few hours on saturday to thrift, I went a little crazy...in addition to a <i>ton</i> of cute clothes, here's what I picked up...</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
this little guy. did I need more blue art glass? no I did not. but $2!! so home he came.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7Fpsp_DYdVZeZ7trTedIlNlQ3NwPWu6870gZrRIuClJQfmv40mP1jpHc62nq1fFwjzPBKydpOO-MNNtpoRIkzraykQmIylBGulYewZt8c7YFoQo6LRuu2YdyxwRu1kBm3uWh0r6b5Zmw/s1600/blueglass.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="450" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7Fpsp_DYdVZeZ7trTedIlNlQ3NwPWu6870gZrRIuClJQfmv40mP1jpHc62nq1fFwjzPBKydpOO-MNNtpoRIkzraykQmIylBGulYewZt8c7YFoQo6LRuu2YdyxwRu1kBm3uWh0r6b5Zmw/s640/blueglass.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I did not find this brass butterfly sculpture saturday, but I've never snapped a photo of him so I thought I'd do that. found at some thrift store, not sure where. incidentally, if "<a href="http://craftnikonline.blogspot.com/2012/01/black-coffee-and-sidecar.html">Black Coffee and a Sidecar</a>" is taken, "Brass Butterfly" would also be an excellent title for a memoir.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
this is pretty certainly<i> not</i> <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C._Jer%C3%A9">C. Jere</a>, but it's got that vibe so it's all good.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
this pink and grey woven, probably South American, sexy throw is also not needed...but I'm on an ethnic-folksy textile kick these days...</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
let's get a closer look at those colors...so eighties! I love it.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIEAlaYqVCtN384YIWlhSVbDqPtFJPJyGG2y86RZGmcfS_-NESO-tDaJ6Pdsq9-KKdY9VVDpztfYmto_Vxs4m0BsNpjfb7i3cwR4XPloMkPjODmPiKsddXVIVKwVvPdDjz5Gmi2GYP7yY/s1600/pinkthrow_02.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIEAlaYqVCtN384YIWlhSVbDqPtFJPJyGG2y86RZGmcfS_-NESO-tDaJ6Pdsq9-KKdY9VVDpztfYmto_Vxs4m0BsNpjfb7i3cwR4XPloMkPjODmPiKsddXVIVKwVvPdDjz5Gmi2GYP7yY/s640/pinkthrow_02.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
and lastly...and bestly...these guys. I don't know, I guess I'm collecting antique shoe forms now?</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhMcMAjy_shEBL_kmg-GKuRnvBByZJZ6ZK__tIT5UrsccQ2-j8WRDCxhCUpycquoQhLX0imuFl3Xi1RZTp3LwW-I-Vz5Mou-GH5iSvjB_01NNWFLiUJznTo4J_-uxJxkLRvjeKSPk-7_Y/s1600/shoe+trees.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhMcMAjy_shEBL_kmg-GKuRnvBByZJZ6ZK__tIT5UrsccQ2-j8WRDCxhCUpycquoQhLX0imuFl3Xi1RZTp3LwW-I-Vz5Mou-GH5iSvjB_01NNWFLiUJznTo4J_-uxJxkLRvjeKSPk-7_Y/s640/shoe+trees.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I just couldn't resist them...that patina! the one with the red handle kills me, the paint is all cracked and worn, so perfect. these are <i>so</i> quirky and random, they feel a bit like a prop in a Pottery Barn catalogue, so I'm not sure how to display them, but I still love em. check out these great stamps:</div>
<div>

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
aren't they adorable? each one is only about an inch across. that's a lot of tiny stitches! I'm sure they got covered in jam and then probably lost in the madness of shooting that book, but I'm glad I took photos before they were used!<br />

<span style="text-align: -webkit-auto;">well, it's monday...again. the weekends are just too short these days! I spent sunday working on a new knitting chart. I've just started knitting the sample but it shouldn't take long.</span></div>

not like the other project...yeesh. I'm still working on my <a href="http://craftnikonline.blogspot.com/2012/01/rippit-rippit.html">Bosc scarf</a>, but crikey that lace knitting is slow going. I'm just over half done with it and it's been almost a month!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
in other news, we bid a fond farewell this weekend to Josh's red chair. he had it for 20 years (though it was not new when he got it) and parting with it was hard for him. but after much consideration, it was decided that the red chair needed to go. then, a nice man from craigslist came and took it away and promised to give it a good home. we stood and watched it drive down the street in the back of his truck, so red and velour and proud. and now there is much more room in our office, and Josh does not need to get me anything for at least the next three Valentine's days.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
{<a href="http://www.closetsideas.com/">via</a>}</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
you know how some people have "good hair days"? I rarely have those, but I try to have "good outfit days". today was a pretty good one. I have SO many clothes, it's really inexcusable to not know what to put on, but that's how I feel most mornings.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
as I've gotten older I've definitely become a fan of routines...I like to eat the same exact thing for breakfast for months on end, for instance. maybe this is part of my <a href="http://craftnikonline.blogspot.com/2011/12/im-dreaming-of-white-christmas-tree.html">"paradox of choice" problem</a>...the more decisions I have to make in a day, the more exhausted and cranky I get. so lately I've really been wishing I was one of those people who only wears one color. I can't seem to find a name for this habit, so I'll coin one..."monosartorial".</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I got obsessed with this idea when I read <a href="http://nymag.com/fashion/08/spring/44210/">this article</a> about 5 monosartorial (see how it's catching on already??) New Yorkers who only wear one color, all day every day. only wearing black doesn't count, <i>obviously</i>. lots of boring people only wear black, and that's so boring it would probably take years to even notice, and even then you'd be like eh, no biggie. I'm talking about people who, like the woman below, wear like...nothing but bright blue (she has blue shoes custom made!). Or Karim Rashid, who only wears white and pink.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYJ2B3fViiDmWQi6Xcur5dzIioJPwqGapduUle32Pfb-CqZf2CNvVRfwIqfU17YO_r2dYn0aHBTYzZwSy6_fcKv88PoAjN14z_o0GiNMqu6Q8EIdCyyfD-VhNZpfZa9YGbxtDDA5MvooM/s1600/monochrome.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="410" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYJ2B3fViiDmWQi6Xcur5dzIioJPwqGapduUle32Pfb-CqZf2CNvVRfwIqfU17YO_r2dYn0aHBTYzZwSy6_fcKv88PoAjN14z_o0GiNMqu6Q8EIdCyyfD-VhNZpfZa9YGbxtDDA5MvooM/s640/monochrome.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
there is also a guy in this article who only wears BROWN, which is so depressing it makes me want to curl up in a ball and cry. he doesn't look chic, he looks like a shut-in.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
if I was going to do this (and I'm definitely thinking about it, for real) I would choose grey. I love grey. it's so versatile, it's clean and neutral...not as impractical as all white, but more interesting than all black. plus grey looks good on me. I mostly love how it would cut down on my decision process...imagine walking into a huge store, and being able to disregard 95% of the options just based on color! it sounds heavenly.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
anyway, if you see me and start to notice that I'm looking very monosartorial, that's what's going on. I've finally decided to make one less decision every day! here's a few fine looks I would be rocking...</div>

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXekh2sELV6mA3JA9OPV0aGh5IEGvvDr3gdIYGtfd3kBCwr4HDQ6NaeBndrkHxk23GlLHjDS3jER4DGljTNwb1XMsgGMvvYHKbxXjX5SQC2DmxcT7RCj9xvBLm32YOaITxQtxPbvaHIQ4/s1600/office+03.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="425" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXekh2sELV6mA3JA9OPV0aGh5IEGvvDr3gdIYGtfd3kBCwr4HDQ6NaeBndrkHxk23GlLHjDS3jER4DGljTNwb1XMsgGMvvYHKbxXjX5SQC2DmxcT7RCj9xvBLm32YOaITxQtxPbvaHIQ4/s640/office+03.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
yea, pretty terrible. we were each using half of his old formica dining table as a desk, and it wasn't working for either of us. Josh wanted more privacy to concentrate on his writing, and I needed a bigger, more flexible workspace that could be used for multiple kinds of projects. don't even get me started on the printers sitting on uhaul boxes under the table...<br />
<br />
then there's the red chair in the right corner....we'll leave that for another post.<br />
<br />
anyway so I measured the room and spent most of saturday making plans...moving little paper furniture around and seeing what fits...kinda like junior high home ec!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBDvTJ25u5sP2nsq1EFLBxVv17FvZfTnfbDWfrrdBBEQ4Z5KF1vdNRPH7bzGlaqVoDjHBlVP_2yq82oZrBvsGj3qUGG-vlmOIvP2VxdvgCbczrcuDgIH1rzkEb4qauawax43n2-hlAtn8/s1600/office+01.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="412" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBDvTJ25u5sP2nsq1EFLBxVv17FvZfTnfbDWfrrdBBEQ4Z5KF1vdNRPH7bzGlaqVoDjHBlVP_2yq82oZrBvsGj3qUGG-vlmOIvP2VxdvgCbczrcuDgIH1rzkEb4qauawax43n2-hlAtn8/s640/office+01.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgb4ou3pVnAYlAuxicwIPGpRZEm_LXZfE8eXl9zn1jZI6nRoGN7MHG1e-g74RDsb3WiSgDi1fTxZBlqnqlMq9Ap_QIYjXI5gR3TxHMMvJlqpnrTsetZnwtoJYtd6L5isL_EYt73o4HdKjk/s1600/office+02.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgb4ou3pVnAYlAuxicwIPGpRZEm_LXZfE8eXl9zn1jZI6nRoGN7MHG1e-g74RDsb3WiSgDi1fTxZBlqnqlMq9Ap_QIYjXI5gR3TxHMMvJlqpnrTsetZnwtoJYtd6L5isL_EYt73o4HdKjk/s640/office+02.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
then this morning it was off to Ikea, right when they opened! then back home to dismantle the formica table, then off to Goodwill with a truck full of old crap, then back home to put new crap together, then cursing and crying when I realized my careful planning had not gone <i>totally</i> perfectly, then BACK to Ikea, this time at 3pm on a weekend, to stand in the RETURNS line, which is basically voluntarily sentencing yourself to 2 hours of total misery, then back home again to finish putting everything together.<br />
<br />
soooo, after all that... the room still looks pretty insane! but I see potential now, Josh is already happy in his little writing den, and we have forward momentum. which is the most important thing of all. here's a sneak peek...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgnwB67oXuC-HtQBmtz13vb0cNrH6LGHpBoUM5Lc_yCQkoXvjrA3N5dGzRfTdFwC1r88Ghmgnr4b0ER7-1vmX4W0DBdVjs-EITtghrdpx_-uBV7putS7E61BcFfirW9C-PfWZy9Bvk8wOY/s1600/office+05.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="478" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgnwB67oXuC-HtQBmtz13vb0cNrH6LGHpBoUM5Lc_yCQkoXvjrA3N5dGzRfTdFwC1r88Ghmgnr4b0ER7-1vmX4W0DBdVjs-EITtghrdpx_-uBV7putS7E61BcFfirW9C-PfWZy9Bvk8wOY/s640/office+05.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
see, still pretty messy! you'd think after all that there would be some impressive "after" photos, but this is real life people. after photos don't really happen in the blink of an eye, unless you have some team of underpaid PAs running around doing all the work, while you just look cute on camera.<br />
<br />
the list of things to do before the "after" is lengthy...new paint (should have done that before the furniture was built, I know), new window treatment, new desk chairs, cute area rugs, new corkboard... and books and knick knacks and art on the walls.<br />
<br />
ugghhhh now I remember why it's been 6 months since we moved in and the office is still a mess.<br />
<br />
to be continued... Jody Ricehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08542932289209859019noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1734407712735096588.post-91291188065683501512012-01-11T20:37:00.000-08:002012-01-11T20:37:48.962-08:00black coffee and a sidecar...<span style="font-size: large;">"Life is a banquet, and most poor suckers are starving to death!"</span><br />
<br />
did you know I'm an Auntie? actually I can't be a <i>real</i> auntie, because I don't have any siblings with kids, but as soon as my dear friend Melanie announced she was expecting, we both knew what her daughter Moira would call me: "Auntie Mame". I like that it was just assumed that I'm officially the adult in Moira's life who is <i>allowed</i> to be a terrible influence.<br />
<br />
I really need to watch the Rosalind Russell version (really, is there any other?) again... aside from her amazing performance, I love the visuals in that movie. her costumes are fantastic, and I certainly appreciate how her hair color changes from scene to scene. but her apartment is the living end!<br />
<br />
her decor changes multiple times, but the best one is when Patrick brings his snooty fiance and her parents, the Upsons, to visit. Mame pulls out the stops to make the place as avant garde as possible and I love it all...<br />
<br />
the crazy white screens! the Danish modern furniture and fireplace!<br />

while I may not have her apartment, and some days I feel more like an Agnes Gooch than an Auntie Mame, I hope to live up to the name. so I started Moira out slowly, with a little festive headwear for her first Christmas. I knitted her this Santa hat from the <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/santa-baby-hat-4">Santa Baby pattern</a> on Ravelry:<br />

the kid can definitely work a hat! Now that I know this, there will be more hats to come. and dresses, and capes, and sequined harem pants...oh, yes.<br />
<br />
(on a side note, I just read that Tilda Swinton is going to be starring in a re-make of Auntie Mame?!? now I love Tilda, and Mame is a kook...but she's not an <i>alien</i>.)<br />
<br />
(and on an even sidey-er side note, I think "Black Coffee and a Sidecar" is going to be the title of my memoirs.)<br />

I spent a month knitting this back in August...just endless rows of stockinette, done in a lovely Noro yarn and some others thrown in for interest. I finally wove in all my ends, blocked it, and finished the side seams. It's the <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/espenson">Espenson sweater</a>, which the pattern description calls an "insouciant caftan style tee".<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
looks pretty on the hanger doesn't it?</div>

<div>
ok, time to put it on! <i>(insert needle scratching on record here)</i></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
hmmmmm...it's really more caftan, less "tee". ok, it's a dress now. put on some tights and sassy boots. </div>

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
yea, that's <i>not</i> working....ok, it's "insouciant"...let's try a hand on the hip! (thus proving there is a waist under there somewhere)</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
ok that's a little better, but you can't walk around like that all day. let's try moving!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5FDBcQKNr0ocB2JCYqpCv4Aeb2xgnbknD7btK30rLZdaen1CovOIdqM5qm1mDSTphrNxbc8JCJPZf3YpYNKqqepQu7tWE0JQy-yXyayqH9gaRGrP06P-gPor_E-E5tnjFEq_R8baooj4/s1600/espenson+05.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="498" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5FDBcQKNr0ocB2JCYqpCv4Aeb2xgnbknD7btK30rLZdaen1CovOIdqM5qm1mDSTphrNxbc8JCJPZf3YpYNKqqepQu7tWE0JQy-yXyayqH9gaRGrP06P-gPor_E-E5tnjFEq_R8baooj4/s640/espenson+05.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
ok, bad idea, moving actually appears to anger it. <span style="font-size: large;">it's getting </span><i><span style="font-size: large;">bigger</span></i>. no more moving!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
yea, so basically this sweater will be perfect on me if I'm ever pregnant with octuplets. (the photos above are the most flattering ones I took, if that tells you anything.) before you blame the first-time sweater knitter, this matches the finished measurements in the pattern pretty much exactly. my gauge was spot on, and after blocking, the bust on mine is actually a couple inches smaller (!!), and the length is a few inches longer. and I made the EXTRA SMALL.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I imagine the large size would make a lovely cozy for a mini-cooper.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
what this has really taught me is to choose my patterns more carefully. I picked the Espenson because it seemed really easy for a beginner (and it was). it's basically a rectangle with a neck hole. when I looked at other people's projects on Ravelry, not many ladies were really rocking it. that should have been the first red flag....and I saw that the finished bust size on the XS was <i>60 freaking inches</i>, and even that didn't stop me, for some reason.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
it's one thing if you take a chance on a sweater that's half off on the Anthro website, and it could either be really funky and unique or really frumpy and bad, but hey you can always return it if it's bad. when you spend a month knitting something, using yarn you really love and were saving for something special, you should probably choose a little more wisely.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
so for now this is going in a drawer and will not be worn, at least until I maybe grow a giant tumor that I need to roll around next to me on a cart.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
as long as the tumor is "insouciant", this will be perfect.</div>Jody Ricehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08542932289209859019noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1734407712735096588.post-11839480249075347252012-01-04T18:35:00.000-08:002012-01-04T18:35:24.236-08:00feeling dottyI think I really need a polka dot sweater...<br />

I wondered why they would call it that and apparently it's because that's the sound a frog makes..."rip-it". yea, knitters are a kinda goofy bunch.<br />
<br />
anyway, did you notice my "lace" knitting in the last post didn't look much like lace? as in, not enough holes? well, I figured out why about a day later and realized that I was doing things SO wrong, that I needed to frog it and start over. It was depressing but I'm glad I did, because now...et voila! Lace!<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhL1mNYPCcv1LtJYCED11togDPja8IS0pw641BXrbMXN3dTXgnlONwVle-AP8JoJ1tUZNNHbYzz4iPhep_yoghBiKPkackhe5hAA3TVCyqguDW2_EpM8vgROsT440tpx_pANHczOlMTbkI/s1600/bosc+scarf+04.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhL1mNYPCcv1LtJYCED11togDPja8IS0pw641BXrbMXN3dTXgnlONwVle-AP8JoJ1tUZNNHbYzz4iPhep_yoghBiKPkackhe5hAA3TVCyqguDW2_EpM8vgROsT440tpx_pANHczOlMTbkI/s640/bosc+scarf+04.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgq9XR_YG2yXxwGxbBSg98U3aktZ7Ycwnq61PP8S93JKO5D5HV8VbeB19kuS_JSWGy5vLFVr6NlVBtta2OwSioMqb8q8ZooceC9B6YwO_AQFl_QBqOdMZygvunuY7j1w4G2fub2XjcDNf0/s1600/bosc+scarf+03.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgq9XR_YG2yXxwGxbBSg98U3aktZ7Ycwnq61PP8S93JKO5D5HV8VbeB19kuS_JSWGy5vLFVr6NlVBtta2OwSioMqb8q8ZooceC9B6YwO_AQFl_QBqOdMZygvunuY7j1w4G2fub2XjcDNf0/s640/bosc+scarf+03.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
so yeah nobody told me there were different types of yarn overs? Up till now, my method of just looking up new stitches on youtube whenever I encountered one I'd never done was working great. The <a href="http://www.youtube.com/user/theknitwitch">Knitwitch</a> has taught me so much, but she failed me this time! But now, thanks to the amazingly generous people on Ravelry, I have learned a ton of lace knitting tricks. Ravelry is like having thousands of super crafty friends who are willing to help you out at any hour of the day. I was even contacted by <a href="http://robinulrich.blogspot.com/">the designer</a> of the scarf I'm working on, with words of encouragement and offers of help getting through the pattern. So cool!<br />
<br />
so it's looking much better now and I'm really enjoying my <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/projects/craftnik/bosc-scarf">Bosc scarf project</a>. I'm also enjoying my new 50mm lens for the camera! I haven't had much time to play with it yet, mostly I've just been pointing it at stuff in my office and trying to get better at manually focusing. But here's a few pretty shots...<br />

<br />
Oh hey 2012, didn't notice you sneaking up on me there. I feel like I barely got to know 2011 and he's out the door already. typical....<br />
<br />
I'm not usually one for resolutions...it's always the same ole stuff we know we should be doing anyway, right? (exercise, budget, organize, floss) but this year I have Plans (<i>with a capital P that rhymes with E and that stands for Etsy!</i>) so I am going to put down in writing here and now that I have some resolutions of the crafty sort for this coming year:<br />
<br />
1. OPEN AN ETSY SHOP. I mean duh, right? why has it taken this long?? laziness, mostly...along with a paralyzing fear that whatever I sell will end up on <a href="http://www.regretsy.com/">Regretsy</a>. I'll probably start by selling vintage rather than handmade, just to get my feet wet. And lord knows I have enough vintage stuff lying around that I need to get rid of. which brings us to number 2...<br />
<br />
2. GET RID OF SOME CRAP. Technically this is not a "craft-olution"...except that getting rid of crap will open up space for resolution number 3....<br />
<br />
3. DREAM STUDIO. ok, I probably can't really have my dream studio in this apartment. But I can turn the second bedroom into so much more than it currently is, which is white, featureless, poorly lit and full of the aforementioned crap. Hopefully having an inspiring space to work in will get me to get off my ass about resolution number 1.<br />
<br />
I actually made a ton of progress on this one already this week, including about 8 bags for Goodwill (working on number 2 already as well!) Check out this before and after action:<br />
<br />
<i>no, I didn't just stuff everything in the closet and close the door!</i><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
anyway so those three are biggies. The rest are small and silly...like get over my fear of lace knitting. I've already started that one too! Check out my butternutty soft scarfy scarf in progress...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiloou1375wpS4YBsd2eIC2FqldqP_biuU8h4mmlhii1qxIXAIgeIZPycDQH75AKzwOgznNXhfeYoau8ZNjdHzPPiAb6YS5Nt222Dq4xkEXonVUTPcZvxdEHgJwJ7sSTk-fw1cvD6qLW_M/s1600/bosc+scarf+01.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiloou1375wpS4YBsd2eIC2FqldqP_biuU8h4mmlhii1qxIXAIgeIZPycDQH75AKzwOgznNXhfeYoau8ZNjdHzPPiAb6YS5Nt222Dq4xkEXonVUTPcZvxdEHgJwJ7sSTk-fw1cvD6qLW_M/s640/bosc+scarf+01.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
going well but I need to figure out why the holes next to my ssk's aren't as big as the k2tog's... it's the <a href="http://robinulrich.blogspot.com/2011/12/new-bosc-scarf-knitting-pattern.html">Bosc scarf pattern by Robin Ulrich</a>. I'm really enjoying it, even though the last thing I need is another scarf! Lace though, man...there is no mindless, "let me do this while I watch Downton Abbey at the same time" kinda knitting there. I gotta read every damn line of the pattern every damn time.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6weT-xQLKJS44CqPaJEdImjBCAGyKhBndNzahW0kbSJbZ1bByymDaLU4kpOmQKx7-jkB5W-4pWuoA8S-3eb4y4PL498ukgdPeJibGkxQ4E1l_MtuKFIDBtRr8lPFUZrz8IopEfvQn50c/s1600/bosc+scarf+02.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="444" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6weT-xQLKJS44CqPaJEdImjBCAGyKhBndNzahW0kbSJbZ1bByymDaLU4kpOmQKx7-jkB5W-4pWuoA8S-3eb4y4PL498ukgdPeJibGkxQ4E1l_MtuKFIDBtRr8lPFUZrz8IopEfvQn50c/s640/bosc+scarf+02.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
what else...oh design more knitting patterns, for sure! My first one, the <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/watercolor-heart-pillow">Watercolor Heart pattern</a> is gaining lots of fans on Ravelry, so now I'm planning more fun intarsia projects to come.<br />
<br />
getting better at photography, that's a big one. those scarf photos above were taken with my new lens (thanks parents!). but I have sooo much more to learn, especially about textile photography, which seems to be harder than you'd think. is it the white balance I'm screwing up? <i>what is white balance exactly??</i> things to answer in 2012...<br />
<br />
and maybe learn something new? I'd really love to take a printmaking class or take up weaving. Ooh or start making mid-century dollhouse furniture, I've just learned that that is a thing! How fun would it be to make tiny molded plywood chairs?? ok, whatev, you have your thing...to me, that sounds super fun.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWDZbY8qeWEe4BKyeKheYE7tSI03P2WTC3nUNv8kn2dfWYeGb2I546K7m2ta-WAqH7N0f11hV5hiBurxK3BMkOO1YD2eqSZJwM_w0yjvfcr-KywtS11CG_FnMQG23_9YhP9_nfPClk_w4/s1600/minicouch.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="265" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWDZbY8qeWEe4BKyeKheYE7tSI03P2WTC3nUNv8kn2dfWYeGb2I546K7m2ta-WAqH7N0f11hV5hiBurxK3BMkOO1YD2eqSZJwM_w0yjvfcr-KywtS11CG_FnMQG23_9YhP9_nfPClk_w4/s400/minicouch.jpeg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMZJXxP2pifQkUZVaoHS3Y7fqtZElauECpVlBPWu5k6dJoCpovMYRiNJBirv-WMCMUrAdgWo6sLIrHZJEPzGGLa6IBkXmvglxtU11RYqdOvHDKbiejQ9tgfEpIHa8lckOc9GOmVbjWKog/s1600/minieames.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMZJXxP2pifQkUZVaoHS3Y7fqtZElauECpVlBPWu5k6dJoCpovMYRiNJBirv-WMCMUrAdgWo6sLIrHZJEPzGGLa6IBkXmvglxtU11RYqdOvHDKbiejQ9tgfEpIHa8lckOc9GOmVbjWKog/s400/minieames.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
and last but not least, keep up with the blogging (and Pinterest!). It's been so fun the past few months sharing my silly posts with you all, and I hope you keep coming back to see how the above resolutions pan out. Knowing me they will change within a week, but hey that's half the fun of resolutions, right? <br />
<br />
oh and don't stop paying your bills this year, thinking the Mayans were right...<br />

have a great new year, friends!Jody Ricehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08542932289209859019noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1734407712735096588.post-25625328641355673362011-12-21T06:49:00.000-08:002011-12-21T06:49:09.913-08:00the point of roughnessHappy Winter Solstice! Tonight is the longest night of the year, which has something to do with the earth being lopsided? Also something-something <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Azimuth"><i>azimuth</i></a>, which is math-y and <i>such a weird word</i>.<br />
<br />
Anyway, the cool part is the days will start being longer again, and soon it won't feel like the constant darkness is going to swallow all the joy in the world.<br />
<br />
Throughout history people have marked the solstice in all kinds of awesome ways. For instance, the Romans celebrated Saturnalia, a festival that included all kinds of tomfoolery including slaves and their masters switching roles for a day.<br />
<br />
At this time of year the Saami peoples of Scandinavia worship the sun-goddess Beiwe, who travels the skies in a structure made of reindeer bones. They cover their doorposts with butter for her to eat on her travels.<br />
<br />
The Welsh call the winter solstice "the point of roughness", which is about the best way I can think of to describe it...that point at which you just don't think you can take the cold and the dark much longer. and then it starts getting better!<br />
<br />
All of this is my way of saying, maybe in the 21st century in Los Angeles California, we should mark the mid-winter with our own unique ritual. maybe something along the lines of modern war paint?<br />
<br />

In other words, I needed something to brighten these cold dark mornings, and a little Manic Panic is just what the doctor ordered. All I need now is a chariot of reindeer bones and some butter.<br />

<br />
I have an accent wall in the kitchen, and I have every intention of doing something wonderful with it...someday. Here's some great walls I've pinned for when that day comes along...<br />
<br />
I'm really wanting to do something more interesting than just a solid bright color. I can't put up wallpaper, but I could paint something like it. this, however, would take a week.<br />

it says a lot that right now the idea of spending days painting a zillion tiny triangles on a wall sounds totally appealing to me. Once I'm in a better state of mind, I may just go with that solid color idea after all!Jody Ricehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08542932289209859019noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1734407712735096588.post-24001585002652578482011-12-15T23:31:00.000-08:002012-01-17T21:16:55.542-08:00I'm dreaming of a white Christmas (tree)have you heard about the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Paradox_of_Choice:_Why_More_Is_Less">Paradox of Choice</a>? maybe the term "maximizer"? I am what you might call a <i>Classic Maximizer</i>. when faced with a decision I am not happy unless I can examine and weigh every single option possible, and then even after finally making a decision (if I ever do) I'm still not happy.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
this is the reason why I still don't have a christmas tree. well, I have one...a crappy little silver one that I got at Ikea for $20 years ago and has really seen better days. for ages I have searched for the perfect tree...every year around November, I start thinking: "this is the year. this year I'll buy a tree"....and yet still no tree.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
this year the problem is compounded by the fact that I now live with Mal, Josh's cat, who promptly tackled the Ikea tree to the floor when I put it up. then, she crawled inside it and got stuck. so now even if I found the perfect tree, I don't know how long it would survive.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
here's the dream tree:</div>

yea, that wouldn't last a day. Mal would climb it like King Kong. this one hangs from the ceiling, but costs $350. for some sticks on a pole? sorry, I meant for a masterpiece of modern simplicity?</div>

there is craftiness happening at Casa Craftnik, I promise...but I CAN'T TALK ABOUT IT, because of Christmas.<br />
<br />
usually I wait until the absolute last minute to make gifts, but this year, with the new job and not a ton of spare hours, I decided to just make a couple things that are easy and can be accomplished in a short amount of time. I feel bad about this, but still better than I would feel about just going to the mall and not making <i>anything</i>.<br />
<br />
so I can't show you what I'm knitting, but I can show you what I'm pinning! here's a few things I pinned on <a href="http://pinterest.com/">Pinterest</a> lately...<br />
